Remembering the glorious activities of His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja
This July issue is a special issue dedicated to His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja, who passed away from this mortal world on May 5, 2024, in Dehradun, India. His passing away has created a vacuum in the minds and hearts of all the devotees within ISKCON, especially his disciples and followers. ““In this issue, you will find senior ISKCON leaders sharing their fond memories of Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja. They highlight Maharaja’s sublime devotional qualities, his dedication to Srila Prabhupada’s mission, and his great concern for protecting the mission of ISKCON. This issue also features the opening of a new ISKCON temple in Rohini, New Delhi, which was the last temple in the list of numerous ISKCON temples that opened under Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja’s leadership and inspiration.““Although we know that one issue is hardly enough to cover the unlimited glories of such a great soul who walked on earth, we nevertheless make a humble attempt to make our readers aware of what it means to be a tireless, dedicated servant of Lord Sri Krishna and the guru-parampara.““—Editors
His Holiness Jayapataka Swami Maharaja

I have been closely associated with His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja since 1968. I had the honor of inviting Maharaja to Vrindavan when the footprints (pada-cihna) of Mahaprabhu were established there. Maharaja also participated in the establishment of Mahaprabhu’s footprints in Mumbai.
Maharaja held a prominent position in the Mayapur community and was a member of its highest committee. He also managed the Mayapur Vrindavan Trust and served as the chairman of the most prestigious committee. To me, Maharaja was a beloved spiritual brother. When my health improved and I learned that Maharaja had left this world, I was deeply shocked. Bhaktivinoda Thakura says that considering a Vaishnava’s departure as death is foolish because a Vaishnava never truly dies; they remain with us in the form of divine sound and teachings.
How fortunate you all are to have received the association of Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja! Do not be disheartened. Maharaja often asked me if he could resign from the Mayapur committee, but I requested him to continue for another year, and he graciously did so. Despite being senior in age, Maharaja always respected me greatly. In recent years, we engaged in many discussions and reflections together.
He cared deeply for all disciples, whether they were mine or his. The GBC members spent the entire day glorifying Maharaja for his contributions.
Today, I want to share with you all that just as Maharaja was dear to me, you all are also very dear to me. To facilitate our communication, I have created a special email ID: gkg.jps@gmail.com. Through this, I aim to serve you and maintain a special connection with all of you.
In Delhi alone, Maharaja established around 15 to 17 temples. Although I will strive to visit each temple, it is a miracle what Maharaja achieved. I once heard Srila Prabhupada express his desire to see around ten temples in Kolkata, a task we have yet to accomplish. However, Maharaja successfully established many temples in Delhi, demonstrating his dedication and service to Srila Prabhupada’s mission.
Maharaja and I were longstanding members of BBT (Bhaktivedanta Book Trust) in India, with Maharaja serving as its president. Under his guidance, India excelled in book distribution, spreading Srila Prabhupada’s teachings far and wide. This remarkable success was possible due to Maharaja’s hard work and blessings.
There is so much more to say about Maharaja, but my health limits me. If you have any questions, please feel free to send them to the email ID provided. Let us continue to honor and cherish the legacy of His Holiness Gopala Goswami Maharaja, drawing inspiration from his life of devotion, service, and unwavering dedication to Srila Prabhupada’s mission.
His Holiness Hridayananda Goswami Maharaja

His Holiness Gopala Krishna Maharaja embodied a remarkable fusion of humility and inner strength, a rare combination indeed. His gentle demeanor belied a fervent dedication to pleasing Prabhupada, which remained steadfast throughout his journey. In the early days of our movement, some displayed fervor for recognition or personal advancement, yet often faltered in their service or retired prematurely when faced with challenges. However, Gopala Krishna Maharaja exemplified a different spirit. His attachment and devotion to Prabhupada transcended mundane desires for acclaim or status. Despite his unparalleled success, his humility remained unaltered. His untiring commitment to Prabhupada reflected a deep spiritual connection, untouched by worldly accolades.
We should deeply honor him for leading a life of impeccable devotion. His initiation into devotional service in this lifetime, though not his first, underscores his eternal commitment to Krishna’s teachings, as highlighted in Chapter 6 of the Gita. Even as Prabhupada left this world, I remained resolute, continuing my duty undeterred. As I made my way to the airport on a melancholic, rain-soaked day, I mourned not just for myself but for the world, feeling the absence of Prabhupada’s grace.
In this time of profound loss for Gopala Krishna Maharaja disciples, true discipleship entails not only personal grieving but also lamenting for the earth’s loss. His faithful disciples, if they embody his spirit, mourn not just for themselves but for the world at large. Though the physical presence may change, his spiritual guidance endures. Prabhupada taught us that the guru transcends mere mortal form; hence, Gopala Krishna Maharaja will always remain a guiding light for his disciples.
Honoring Gopala Krishna Goswami involves more than ceremonial rituals; it requires emulation of his selfless devotion and unwavering commitment to Prabhupada’s mission. His life exemplifies complete surrender to the cause. Therefore, the true homage to him lies not just in words or rituals but in embodying his teachings and fulfilling his mission with utmost dedication. We know his desires through his unyielding devotion to Prabhupada’s mission, and it is upon us, his disciples, to honor him through our actions, thus expressing our true guru-bhakti.
His Holiness Giriraja Swami Maharaja

In the sacred year of 1973, whispers of his virtuous deeds reached my ears—tales of his expansive service at Sorbonne University in Paris and Mc Gill University in Montreal, his esteemed role at Pepsi Cola and Resto Miles. I heard of his humble visits to the New York temple, where he, in his humility, offered obeisance to every spiritual painting adorning the temple walls. Thus, before our paths crossed, his aura of piety had already touched my soul.
During those auspicious weeks in 1973, when the luminous presence of our revered Srila Prabhupada graced the Satopila Palatial home in South Bombay, I witnessed a divine connection between him and Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja—a connection distinct from that with other disciples. In their exchanges, I glimpsed the radiance of a special bond, and I knew then that Maharaja was indeed extraordinary.
Two years later, the divine orchestration of destiny unfolded as Tamala Krishna Goswami Maharaja relinquished his role as the GBC for India. Srila Prabhupada, recognizing Maharaja’s illustrious career in the corporate world, entrusted him with significant responsibilities. Maharaja’s journey from prestigious boardrooms to the sacred precincts of Juhu Temple symbolized a transition from worldly success to spiritual fulfillment.
Upon his arrival in Juhu, Maharaja’s first act was to honor his mother in Santa Cruz—a gesture that spoke volumes of his gentle demeanor and familial reverence. His warmth and respect for her were a rarity among devotees raised in America, where parental understanding of Krishna consciousness often posed challenges.
Amidst the challenges of acquiring land and permissions to build the temple at Juhu, Maharaja and I, guided by Srila Prabhupada’s grace, formed a formidable partnership. Through countless trials and tribulations, our unwavering devotion and mutual respect fortified our resolve. Together, we navigated the intricate maze of bureaucracy and opposition, eventually securing the necessary approvals to realize Srila Prabhupada’s vision.
In the middle of his myriad accomplishments, Maharaja’s dedication to publishing and distributing books in India stands out. His efforts, often spurred by Srila Prabhupada’s inquiries, brought immense satisfaction to the spiritual master’s heart.
Maharaja’s dedication to spreading spiritual wisdom shines brightest. Whether in the hallowed halls of academia or the bustling streets of Moscow, his stanch commitment to sharing Krishna consciousness has left an indelible mark on countless souls.
In 1977, amidst the shadows of Soviet repression, Maharaja’s ingenuity shone forth as he carried Srila Prabhupada’s books into Moscow’s book fair—a feat that surely filled Srila Prabhupada’s heart with pride and joy.
Yet, amidst Maharaja’s managerial acumen and tireless efforts, his heart yearned for a deeper connection with the divine. His longing to preach and share the teachings of krishna-katha remained unfulfilled until fate intervened. With the bestowal of sannyasa and the honorific title Bhagavat-pada, Maharaja’s journey took a profound spiritual turn.
Maharaja’s life embodies the essence of devotion—impeccable sadhana, unwavering love for his deities, and tireless service to his guru and godbrothers. His leadership in expanding book distribution, cultivating influential relationships, and spearheading major projects epitomizes selfless devotion to the cause of spreading Krishna consciousness.
In our shared journey, marked by occasional differences in approach, Maharaja’s steadfast dedication to Srila Prabhupada’s mission remains steady. Gopala Krishna Maharaja used to say, “We are like a Vedic couple; we may have differences but there is no question of divorce, bound by our common goal—to please our beloved guru and spread the light of Krishna consciousness.
As I reflect on Maharaja’s illustrious journey, I am filled with gratitude for his boundless compassion and spiritual wisdom. In his eternal service to Srila Prabhupada and the guru parampara, Maharaja remains a guiding light—a testament to the transformative power of devotion.
May we all be inspired by his example, ready to make any sacrifice and expend any amount of energy for the service of Srila Prabhupada and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
His Holiness Radhanath Swami Maharaja
It is both a privilege and an honor to gather with all of you to commemorate and reflect upon the life and legacy of Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja.

As time unfolds, my reverence and admiration for Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja continue to deepen with each passing day. His unwavering humility, absolute dedication, and complete surrender to Srila Prabhupada’s mission serve as an enduring source of inspiration. In facing the innumerable challenges of his health and the immense responsibilities he undertook, Maharaja displayed an undaunted commitment, approaching every task with firm resolve and steadfast dedication.
Maharaja approached every task with untiring commitment, viewing each as a lifelong mission. His leadership roles, including as the chairman of various bureaus and trusts, and his contributions to temple construction, book distribution, and Ratha-yatras are unparalleled.
Reflecting on the words of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, we understand that the path to developing pure devotion lies in emulating the footsteps of great souls like Srila Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja. Maharaja’s steadfastness and firm dedication to every responsibility he embraced exemplify his lifetime commitment to serving Srila Prabhupada and his mission. Despite the enormity of his tasks, Maharaja approached each endeavor as a sacred life mission, drawing strength from the mercy of Srila Prabhupada.
Since our first encounter in the mid-1970s, Maharaja has showered me with kindness, grace, and encouragement, nurturing any budding sparks of service to Srila Prabhupada within me. His persistent commitment to furthering Srila Prabhupada’s mission, akin to the early days at 26 Second Avenue, Bowery street, transformed him into one of the most influential preachers in our Gaudiya Vaishnava parampara. Maharaja’s unparalleled connections with political leaders and dignitaries, coupled with his tireless efforts in book distribution and temple construction, underscore his monumental contributions to Krishna consciousness worldwide.
His departure from this mortal realm, orchestrated by the grace of Krishna and Srila Prabhupada, was a testament to his unwavering commitment to duty and responsibility. As I reflect on his life, I am filled with profound humility and gratitude for the opportunity to have been in his presence.
Each book inspired by Maharaja’s guidance carries his divine presence, blessing every soul that encounters its message. Through his disciples and followers, Maharaja’s legacy lives on, perpetuating Srila Prabhupada’s teachings and culture for generations to come. I bow my head in reverence at the lotus feet of Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja countless times, acknowledging the countless lives touched by his mercy and grace.
His Holiness Kavichandra Swami Maharaja

The reverence Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja commanded was evident when, within three hours since he has left, letters of praise poured in from prominent figures such as the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister. admiration for Maharaja’s service underscores his esteemed status as a spiritual leader, deeply respected by influential personalities. This widespread recognition speaks volumes about his impactful presence and spiritual leadership.
I first encountered Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja in Bombay in 1978. At that time, he was deeply involved with the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT), which limited our interactions. However, our paths frequently crossed over the years in both Bombay and Delhi. His gracious nature always shone through, whether in parikramas in Vrindavan or Mayapur. Maharaja’s presence was a constant source of inspiration and guidance.
Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja was a unique and gifted individual, embodying a rare combination of genius, productivity, and humility. Reflecting on the qualities of the greatest Vaishnavas and acaryas, it is evident that Maharaja exemplified all these exalted attributes. His life was a living testament to the virtues described in the scriptures.
In every aspect of his life, Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja exemplified the ideal Vaishnava, much like Bhakti Tirtha Maharaja. He was wholly dedicated to his service with immense love, reverence, and submissiveness, all rooted in deep love for Krishna. His numerous accomplishments, whether establishing the Delhi temples or others across India, stand evident to his incredible dedication to book distribution and his profound humility. Maharaja’s influence, power, and popularity never swayed his renunciation.
Maharaja often demonstrated his humility by sleeping on floors, owning no personal property, and living a life of simplicity. The only possession he ever had was a Rolex watch given by Srila Prabhupada.
Known for his scholarly pursuits and strict adherence to sadhana, Maharaja’s kindness and loving nature drew many to the temple. Much like how people are drawn to a church for the community and friendship it offers, Maharaja’s friendly and approachable demeanor developed a sense of belonging and devotion among the devotees.
Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja faced numerous challenges throughout his life, particularly as part of the GBC and in temple construction. Yet, he always emerged victorious, turning obstacles into opportunities. His ability to navigate complex situations and build relationships ensured the successful expansion of ISKCON’s mission.
Maharaja’s played a pivotal role in the development of the Juhu temple, skillfully managing conflicts and bureaucratic challenges to bring Srila Prabhupada’s vision to fruition. His diplomatic skills and deep understanding of local dynamics were instrumental in these successes.
Under Maharaja’s guidance, many young brahmacaris joined the temple and flourished. His ability to nurture and inspire devotees has left a lasting legacy. From a small group of devotees in the early days to a thriving community, his influence has been profound.
Maharaja’s steadfastness and dedication have made him one of the longest-standing members of Srila Prabhupada’s mission. His ability to maintain calm and provide guidance even in chaotic situations has earned him immense respect and love. He made friends with everyone, creating a harmonious and supportive environment for all devotees.
Maharaja’s vision extended beyond India. He helped establish numerous temples worldwide, spreading Krishna consciousness far and wide. His relentless efforts have inspired many to follow in his footsteps, contributing to the growth and sustainability of ISKCON.
The ISKCON temple in Delhi has transformed from a small apartment in Lajpat Nagar to its current grandeur, Sri Sri Radha Parthsarathi temple. We remember how, in 1978, the Juhu temple was scarcely attended, while the nearby Chandan Cinema thrived. Today, the roles are reversed, with the temple halls filled with devotees, thanks to Maharaja’s relentless dedication.
In honoring Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja, we acknowledge the thoughtful impact he has had on countless lives. As we reflect on his life, let us strive to embody the same virtues and dedication, carrying forward his legacy with reverence and love. His last instructions, not only for his disciples but for all his god brothers, reflect the teachings of Srila Prabhupada. It is now our responsibility to carry forward his legacy, spreading Krishna consciousness and contributing to the building of temples.
His Holiness BB Govinda Swami Maharaja

Today, we gather to extend our heartfelt condolences to the disciples of His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja. While our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we should also celebrate his extraordinary life and achievements.I am profoundly grateful to be among such a distinguished and devout assembly of Vaishnavas and honored to be in the company of my godbrothers who have steadfastly supported Maharaja in expanding the Krishna consciousness movement in India.
To begin, let us reflect on the words of Srila Prabhupada: “Why have a few selected persons come here? Because it requires a background of pious activities; otherwise, it is not possible. We cannot expect self-centered people to embrace Krishna consciousness. But if there is one ideal Krishna conscious person, he can benefit thousands, like the single moon that illuminates the entire sky.” In this light, Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja was truly a Candra—a moon—in the society of Krishna consciousness.
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared 500 years ago as the Karunavatara, the incarnation of compassion, to deliver the most unfortunate and unqualified souls with love, compassion, and humility. Mahaprabhu’s life teaches us that even those deemed ordinary can be elevated and become acaryas within his movement. Caitanya Mahaprabhu renounced his family to spread Krishna consciousness throughout India. Since then, all great saints in his line have continued this mission.
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura envisioned spreading Krishna consciousness worldwide, and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura established the Gaudiya Matha to further this mission. Srila Prabhupada took his Guru Maharaja’s message to heart, dedicating his life to spreading Mahaprabhu’s mercy globally. Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja, a disciple of Srila Prabhupada, embodied this spirit.
Maharaja was a pillar of ISKCON, dedicating over five decades to the movement. I first met Maharaja in 1972-73 in Toronto when he came to audit the books. Even as a young man, he stood out with his deep dedication. Born into a cultured Indian family and highly educated, Maharaja embraced Srila Prabhupada’s teachings with profound commitment. His work with the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) led to the translation and distribution of millions of books worldwide.
Maharaja inspired the construction of magnificent temples, including the latest jewel, the Rohini temple. Despite his monumental achievements, he remained humble, attributing success to the collective efforts of the team. Maharaja cultivated thousands of devotees, bringing them to the lotus feet of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and enabling them to experience divine love through harinama-sankirtana.
Srila Prabhupada wanted books printed, temples built, and devotees cultivated, and Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja fulfilled these wishes like no other. His dedication, wisdom, and compassion were evident in his fearless efforts, such as taking Srila Prabhupada’s books to the Soviet Union during the stringent regime of the 1980s. Maharaja’s influence extended beyond Russia, reaching Central Asia, where he managed donations and built beautiful temples.
In Vrindavan, I recently had the opportunity to express my admiration for Maharaja’s accomplishments. His humility was striking as he attributed his successes to the team. Maharaja served as a GBC member for 50 years, an arduous role he embraced with stanch commitment. He always identified himself as a servant, constantly seeking ways to serve others.
Maharaja’s legacy is one of compassion, kindness, and devotion. He never judged or dismissed individuals, always embodying the love and humanity taught by Srila Prabhupada and Caitanya Mahaprabhu. His disciples have seen and reflected these qualities, creating an atmosphere of love and appreciation that is a testament to his influence.

Srila Prabhupada once said he was loved by everyone because he loved everyone. Similarly, Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja’s love for all made him beloved by all. He accomplished in one lifetime what many cannot achieve in hundreds. His dedication ensures that his teachings and spirit will live on through his disciples, who will continue to honor his legacy by living by his instructions.
His Holiness Navayogendra Swami Maharaja

The departure of Srila Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja is a profound loss for the movement. Maharaja exemplified selfless dedication, often neglecting his own well-being to ensure the success of preaching programs. Even in his final days, he traveled to Dehradun for a temple program, despite his failing health, and left his body there. Such great souls are incredibly rare. It was through Prabhupada’s mercy that Maharaja was able to transform the lives of countless souls.
Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja was a remarkably educated devotee, holding double M.A. degrees and working for Pepsi Cola before he renounced it all for the service of the movement. This significant sacrifice is not easy; he gave up a promising career for a life of devotion. I had the honor of his personal association for eight years and always observed his steady focus on expanding the movement and ensuring that preaching was done correctly. His dedication and tireless efforts are deeply missed.
One of Maharaja’s major contributions was his work with the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT). His hard work led to a flourishing of BBT in India, to the extent that Indian book distribution surpassed that of America. His sincere efforts and dedication played a crucial role in this achievement.
Maharaja also displayed immense compassion and perseverance in nurturing and saving the lives of devotees. I remember an incident in Canada where a devotee was misbehaving, and despite the challenges, Maharaja encouraged and brought him back to the service of Srila Prabhupada. He never gave up on anyone, no matter how fallen they were.
Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja lived this principle. He saved and nurtured countless fallen souls, engaging them in the service of Guru, Gauranga, and Krishna. His departure creates a deep sense of separation, yet it is a reminder that we all must leave this material world eventually. Our true home is the spiritual world, and by following the path of devoted souls like Maharaja, we too can return home, back to Godhead.
His Holiness Lokanatha Swami Maharaja

Facing this time is a monumental challenge for everyone, myself included. Maharaja was my associate, my partner, my constant companion within ISKCON. Now that he is no longer with us, it is a profound emotional and spiritual challenge to cope with his absence. While this tirobhava-tithi is called a celebration, it is also a time of great sorrow and reflection. When our esteemed acaryas depart, they enter the eternal pastimes of the Lord, which is both a cause for grief and for divine joy.
Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja’s departure leaves a significant void. He was not just a colleague but a team member with me in ISKCON. Since 1975, we worked closely together, serving Srila Prabhupada. I recall many instances when Maharaja’s clarity and vision guided us. For example, he was adamant that I should not travel extensively and wanted me to stay with him in Mumbai. Eventually, Srila Prabhupada himself permitted me to travel, and I became in charge of the sankirtana party, moving from town to town, distributing books and spreading the teachings.
In 1978, Maharaja called me to Delhi to become the temple president. It was his vision and dedication that led to the establishment of multiple temples in Delhi. Initially, there was only a desire for one temple, but under his leadership, we saw the construction of 18 beautiful temples, each serving as a beacon of Krishna consciousness.
One particularly memorable moment was the opening of Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi Temple, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This was a landmark event, the first time a prime minister attended such a ceremony. This temple, along with many others, stands as a testament to Maharaja’s dedication and tireless efforts.
Maharaja’s commitment was unparalleled. Even in his sleep, he served the deities, embodying 24/7 dedication to Krishna consciousness. His hard work and anxiety for ISKCON’s welfare and the happiness of its devotees were constant. I cannot think of anyone who worked as tirelessly as Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja.
Our relationship was not just professional but deeply personal. When Maharaja was on his deathbed, I rushed to be by his side. Even in his final moments, he tried to chant “Hare Krishna,” showing his unfaltering devotion till his last breath. His departure is a significant loss for all of us, but we must carry forward his legacy.
His Holiness Bhaktirasamrita Swami Maharaja

Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja stands as a unique personality and a wonderful example for all of us in countless ways. It is difficult to capture in a short piece the tireless service he rendered to Srila Prabhupada. Maharaja was completely determined to pursue whatever was helpful for that service. Always on the move, one day here and another day in a completely different part of the world, he never ceased in his efforts. Only in the last few months have I seen him slow down, and even then, not by much. He still attended Bureau meetings, actively participated, and met with the devotees. He has been a wonderful example for everyone, bringing stability and unity to the Indian Yatra. His ever-readiness to serve anywhere in the world, as needed by ISKCON, is an exemplary model for all of us. His presence will be deeply missed by everyone, regardless of how much contact they had with him.
A year ago, I read about a man considered the richest person in the world, described in such a way that by the time you finish counting his wealth, it has already increased. It’s said that one can never accurately estimate his wealth because it keeps growing faster than it can be counted. Similarly, when I contemplate the glorification of Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja in Vrindavan, I see the same phenomenon. Every time I visit Delhi, I hear about new branches of ISKCON opening up. There is always something new to see or hear about Maharaja’s work. It astonishes me that one person can establish so many centers and temples in a single city. Every time I come, I find a new temple has opened. Maharaja has made not only the Delhi Yatra immensely spiritually wealthy but has spread this spiritual wealth all over the world. Krishna-bhakti is the greatest wealth, far surpassing gold and silver, which can fade or lose value if not used in the service of the Lord.
Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja has enriched countless temples and devotees worldwide with this true wealth. Beyond Delhi, he has blessed and guided many other temples. He has constructed numerous temples, inspired many devotees, and distributed countless books. Just as the quality of a tree is known by its fruits, the virtues of a person reveal their greatness. Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja stands out as an unparalleled and faultless individual in our lives. As I mentioned in Vrindavan, there are many devotees, but Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja is a distinctive personality.
Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja has set a high standard, and it is essential for us to strive to follow his guidance. Although reaching his level is challenging, it is our responsibility and duty to follow in his footsteps as much as possible.
His Holiness Karunamayi Vanamali Maharaja

His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja was born in 1944 in New Delhi. Incidentally, Srila Prabhupada started the Back to Godhead magazine in 1944, and he would spend several days and weeks roaming in the streets of Delhi in order to get his books printed and distributed.
Maharaja often taught that we are capable of much: the art of living, the art of giving, and the art of forgiving. He reminds us that just as God forgives us for our countless mistakes, we too should embody forgiveness. It is evident in the life of His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja. Maharaja desires to impart pure devotion (suddha-bhakti) and love (prema) to all, following in the footsteps of Srila Prabhupada. Despite the imperfections of devotees, Maharaja exemplifies the art of giving and forgiving, showing us that true bhakti lies in love and forgiveness.
Before initiation, many of us were troubled and lost. However, under Maharaja’s shelter, we found peace and direction. He taught us that the path of bhakti is simple, pure, and accessible. Maharaja encouraged devotees to serve the Deities with devotion and to engage in the service of the holy name.
A viral video showed Maharaja, despite not being in the best of health, performing arati and other worship rituals with closed eyes, deeply engrossed in divine service. This epitomizes his dedication and connection with the divine, illustrating the sacred teachings found in the scriptures and practiced by him.
Many devotees would come to him with problems, and Maharaja advised them to engage in simple acts of devotion. Distributing books and reading them has brought about miraculous transformations in the lives of many. This simplicity and directness make the process of bhakti accessible to all, echoing the teachings of Srila Prabhupada.
In discussions with other devotees, Maharaja emphasized that bhakti is about transformation and improvement. He taught that everyone can be reformed through sincere devotion. Maharaja clearly understood both philosophy and rasa (devotional sentiment) and ensured that his teachings are grounded in both scriptural wisdom and practical application.
Assisting Maharaja during initiation, I have witnessed his profound esoteric realizations. Despite not displaying them openly, it is clear from his actions and demeanor that he is deeply immersed in eternal pastimes with Lord Krishna.
Madhavananda Prabhu of ISKCON Mira Road, an Ayurvedic expert and a gold medalist, once checked Maharaja’s pulse and found that all three major nadis—Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarasvati—were active, a rare phenomenon usually seen in those who meditate deeply in the Himalayas. This shows Maharaja’s extraordinary spiritual stature and dedication.
Throughout his day, Maharaja would engage in arati, chanting, management, lectures, and more, all while maintaining a meditative focus on serving Srila Prabhupada. This serves as an inspiration for all of us to dedicate ourselves to our spiritual practices.
Let us all meditate on and draw inspiration from the wonderful devotees who glorify His Holiness Gopala Goswami Maharaja.
Bhima Dasa

His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja’s staunch faith in Srila Prabhupada translated into volumes of dedicated service to ISKCON family. He was the person we all went to when there was a problem, when we needed to know what to do, who listened to us very patiently. By following Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja’s example of faith and love in his Guru Maharaja, we can remain in touch with him.
It is easy to pay our mobile bill, but no amount of wealth or any material thing can pay the debt owed to the spiritual master, for there will always be an amount outstanding. Yet Maharaja showed by his life’s example how to serve by tirelessly working for the pleasure of Srila Prabhupada. There is no match to his efforts in service, but we can try to follow in his footsteps by being kind to all, big or small.
Let us fill the vacancy of his physical presence with remembering his wonderful qualities. Let us remember his enthusiasm and encouragement to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books. Let us remain focused on how Maharaja loved the Lord’s arca-vigraha-seva. In such remembrance we will be in touch with him always.
Her Grace Mahadevi Dasi (ACBSP)

His Holiness Gopal Krsna Maharaj, an Acarya so dear,
has gone back to Godhead, yet we wipe away a tear.
Your departure has left a void, a gaping hole,
Now service in separation, Haribol Haribol.
We will miss your rose and thunderbolt guidance, your loving care,
Your wisdom and compassion, beyond compare.
Your presence so dedicated to our Srila Prabhupada was a blessing to see, a treasure to behold…
Your enlivening classes, your living wisdom, your kindness to all we saw unfold.
You would always ask me, how are you, how is life?
Your words of encouragement, gave us strength to fight.
You showed us the path to a life of perseverance and devotion,
In your absence, we feel a deep emotion and will strive for devotion, not commotion.
I will always remember your kindness, your humility and grace,
The way you touched our hearts, sincerity of purpose on your face.
Though your vapu is no longer here, your legacy remains,
A beacon of hope, that guides us through life’s pains.
We will miss you, dear Maharaj, more than words can say, And pray that your wisdom continues to guide us on our way.
Devakinandana Dasa
On this day of both joy and sorrow, I can feel the embrace of His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja. Kvaham daridrah papiyan kva krishnah sri-niketanah: I feel myself like Sudama embraced by Lord Krishna.

For more than 45 years, Maharaja has been my constant guide and friend. He encouraged me, even scolded me often saying “You are in maya.”).He appreciated my efforts and showed me how to serve Srila Prabhupada with love and dedication.
Maharaja is the one person who kept us all together for so long. He was certainly a pure devotee and acted humbly to engage us in the service of Krishna. He took us all into the service of Srila Prabhupada and ISKCON. He never got into any controversial things, either philosophical or managerial, but only adopted the middle path to satisfy everyone. If I am in ISKCON today, it is only because of his love and kindness, otherwise as per my nature I would not have been able to remain a devotee, at least in India.
Maharaja set a perfect example for us by remaining a devoted follower of Srila Prabhupada. He ensured that Srila Prabhupada’s body, ISKCON, remains safe against all the vicissitudes of time. He was an intelligent leader, accommodating all differences to accomplish the mission, and a reliable teacher from whom we learned a lot just by watching him.
The NCR community is a shining example of his commitment to ISKCON. Engaging local people through temple programs, home programs, plays, theater shows and book distribution, and connecting national political leaders and top people through amazing relationships. He built beautiful temples, and his enthusiasm for book distribution has no match in the entire universe. He inspired and created amazing new leaders.
While we are saddened by his passing, let us remember his teachings and try to live by them every day. In this way, we keep his presence bright in our lives.
Suradas Dasa
His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja was Srila Prabhupada man. In spite of having big material qualifications, he started serving his spiritual master with humble service, which attracted Srila Prabhupada’s attention. Srila Prabhupada instantly engaged him in printing books. He soon became a trustee of BBT.

Whenever he would come to meet Srila Prabhupada, Maharaja would bring a newly published book. His dedication won the heart of his spiritual master, and soon Srila Prabhupada made him the GBC of the whole India. After he became the GBC, he never looked back, and the movement greatly expanded in India. In the 80’s, he was designated as GBC initiating guru. His lectures and kirtans have had great impact on the young Indians, thus becoming instrumental in engaging thousands of youths in devotional service. I am also one of the recipients of his mercy and am now engaged in Srila Prabhupada’s seva in his office.
As as humble servant of Srila Prabhupada, he became a very potent spiritual master — to almost 5000 thousand disciples. He established more than 50 temples. He pioneered meeting the high officials in India like PM’s, Presidents, corporate leaders and others. He never quoted scriptures other than Srila Prabhupada’s books. His 58 years of dedication is unparalleled. His sadhana-bhakti was cent percent. He travelled all over the world including Russia, China and Pakistan for expanding ISKCON movement.
I have been serving him for the last 48 years. In him I have seen excellent persona of humility, dedication, devotion and lots of compassion. He never utilized donation perks for his life, rather utilised every rupee in the service of guru and Krishna. His declaration that he possessed only two things — the Rolex watch that Srila Prabhupada gifted him and his personal deities — has set a brilliant example for all time to come.
He often visited the upcoming iconic project of ISKCON Kharghar and appreciated it very much. We will miss him during its opening. His disciples and well-wishers are feeling an immense vacuum in their lives after his departure.
Dhananjaya Krishna Dasa

I was drawn into Krishna consciousness through IIT preaching programs, house programs, and the early stages of the ISKCON Youth Forum. His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja guided my spiritual growth, ensuring thatI attended mangala-arati, took prasada, and dressed suitably for work, weaving spiritual discipline seamlessly into my everyday life. By 1998, having married with Maharaja’s blessings, I embraced a deeper level of spiritual engagement, marking a profound shift in my devotional path.
I embraced Maharaja’s vision to bring professionalism, technical, and technological enhancements to the Sant Nagar temple in Delhi. Maharaja’s nurturing spirit and strategic foresight were particularly evident as he spearheaded the midday meal program in schools. Motivated by his guidance, I began developing presentations and engaging with potential patrons. This effort underscored my desire to assist Maharaja full-time, integrating my professional skills into the service of our spiritual community. As the years passed, my initial role as the first employee often led me to boast about my foundational position, to which Maharaja humorously yet pointedly remarked, “Indeed, your picture should be there in every center,” a gentle nudge that reminded me of the humility at the heart of service. This journey culminated in 2023 when I was honored with a trustee position in Annamrita Foundation.
Reflecting on Srila Prabhupada’s words, “ISKCON is my body, and the BBT is my heart,” Maharaja took his role as the trustee of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) to heart, becoming a pivotal figure in preserving and nurturing the spiritual core of ISKCON. His leadership was devoid of any sectarianism or personal agenda, focused solely on uplifting and expanding our collective consciousness.
Highly presentable and intellectually profound, yet invariably modest and dignified, Maharaja transcended mere spiritual discussions in his interactions. His engagements with top industrialists, intellectuals, and political figures, including local civic leaders and prime ministers, were marked by a nuanced blend of practical wisdom and compassionate counsel that resonated deeply with all. On one occasion, while waiting in the VIP area for a meeting with a Chief Minister, Maharaja exemplified his principle that not a moment should be wasted. Observing me sitting idly, he seized the opportunity to teach by example. He promptly began introducing himself and engaging in meaningful dialogue with those around us, demonstrating his proactive nature and deep respect for time.
As profound as the loss of my parents was, the departure of Guru Maharaja struck a deeper chord, leaving a void filled with cherished memories and timeless teachings. His life, a beautiful symphony of devotion, discipline and love, continues to inspire and guide us, echoing through the annals of time with the gentle power of a spiritual titan.
Mohana Rupa Dasa

I once met a disciple of Prabhupada who shared a profound insight: if one could follow even 1% of their Guru Maharaja’s teachings, attaining Bhagwat Dham is certain. I pondered how this 1% could be achieved. Just as Sri Rupa Goswami wrote the“Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu,” Srila Vishwanath Chakravarti Thakura wrote “Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu Bindu,” signifying that even a drop from the ocean of devotion is enough for salvation. Similarly, if one dedicates even a little service to Gurudev, their liberation is assured.
Gurudeva spent his life in austerity and sacrifice, a tribute witnessed by many. Like Prabhupada, Gurudev’s lectures were concise yet profound, typically lasting 30 to 45 minutes, filled with the same depth of content. His teachings never wavered, staying true to Prabhupada’s message. His simple yet powerful speeches have left a lasting impact on everyone, including prominent industrialists and politicians.
Recently, Anil Agarwal, a renowned industrialist from London, visited Gurudeva at East of Kailash. Overwhelmed by Gurudev’s presence, Agarwal praised him, saying that if Gurudeva were in his field, he would surpass industrial giants like Tata and Birla. Agarwal’s heartfelt admiration went on for 15-20 minutes, highlighting how deeply people are influenced by Gurudev’s demeanor, respect, love, and humility. Yet, when preaching, he transforms into a lion, boldly speaking the truth without compromise.
In Connaught Place, Gurudeva once met a highly arrogant industrialist. Through his eloquent preaching, Gurudeva humbled the man, showcasing his profound ability to leave an indelible mark on everyone he met. Despite his humility with devotees, Gurudev’s boldness in preaching was like a lion’s roar. He never compromised on the truth, presenting his views with simplicity and strength.
Gurudeva was also a master of face reading, possessing the divine ability to understand what was in someone’s mind just by looking at them. Despite having such divine powers, he never boasted about them. He lived simply, never showing off his mystic abilities. Once, he mentioned, “I am so sharp that I can enter into your mind,” indicating his profound ability to understand people’s thoughts.
Gurudev’s empathy was evident when a repentant person approached him. Seeing the person’s tears, Gurudeva too began to weep, showing his deep compassion and understanding of others’ emotions. He could forgive instantly those who sincerely repented, displaying immense compassion and mercy.
Even though Gurudeva is no longer physically present, we can always connect with him through his words, books, and lectures. Many devotees share their personal experiences, revealing how Gurudeva has touched thousands of hearts worldwide, whether in India, Russia, or Canada. This personal relationship he had with each devotee continues to inspire and guide us on our spiritual journey.
In this tribute, the essence of love and devotion for Guru Maharaja shines brightly. His profound impact on devotees and his unique ability to blend humility with boldness in his teachings remain a beacon of light. His divine presence continues to touch and inspire countless hearts worldwide, guiding us with love and devotion on our spiritual paths.
Rukmini Krishna Dasa

As I write this, three distinct emotions run through me. Firstly, I feel an even deeper connection to Guru Maharaja. Secondly, I am filled with regret and sorrow for having taken his immense love, care, and instructions for granted. The third emotion is a deep appreciation for his exemplary behavior and beautiful instructions, which I will attempt to share.
My first meeting with Guru Maharaja took place on December 10, 1997, on a cold winter day at the Punjabi Bagh temple. It was my first time attending the Saturday Love Feast. Guru Maharaja, though very busy, answered my question with great encouragement, calling it a very intelligent question. This initial interaction fueled my desire to meet him more frequently and to listen to his and Mohana Rupa Prabhu’s lectures.
Guru Maharaja instructed me to start preaching at the Punjabi Bagh temple, despite my initial hesitation and lack of understanding of what preaching entailed. His encouragement and personal attention guided me through every step. When I went for training in Pune, he ensured that I received special treatment, even arranging a VIP room for my stay, emphasizing his care and personal attention to each devotee.
One memorable instance of his deep concern for every devotee was when I requested him to visit my ailing mother. Despite his tight schedule, he graciously accepted, spending time at my home, and even engaging in kirtan with my mother. His personal touch and empathy were profound, and he always made sure I felt valued and cared for.
In 2005, after my mother passed away, Guru Maharaja’s comforting words reminded me of the transient nature of the material body and the importance of spiritual progress. He remembered every detail and always checked on me, showing his resolute support and attention to the well-being of his devotees.
Guru Maharaja’s exemplary behavior extended to his meticulous management and deep spiritual practice. He balanced his administrative duties with unyielding devotion, often found chanting or engaged in deity worship even in his sleep. His ability to maintain a deep connection with Krishna while managing numerous responsibilities was truly inspiring.
One of the most touching aspects of his personality was his emotional involvement with the devotees. Whenever there was a dispute or conflict, he would often become very emotional, emphasizing the importance of unity over personal ambition. His final instructions always focused on cooperation and collective harmony, which he lived by until his last breath.
As I reflect on these memories, I am reminded of Guru Maharaja’s final departure from this world at a place aptly named Synergy. This beautiful coincidence underscores his lifelong teaching of unity and cooperation. Even in his passing, he left us with a powerful reminder to stay united and supportive of one another.
In honor of Guru Maharaja, let us always remember his teachings, embody his principles of love and devotion, and strive to keep the synergy he championed alive in our hearts and communities. His divine presence continues to guide us, and his legacy of devotion and love will forever inspire our spiritual journey.

In the tranquil halls of devotion, the year 1991 marked a significant milestone as I had the privilege of encountering param-pujya Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja for the first time at the temple. Although the exact details of our interaction may have faded with time, the essence of Maharaja’s teachings and his radiant smile remain etched in my memory.

Maharaja’s serene countenance, free from any traces of worry or tension, left a profound impact on all who beheld it. Despite the enormity of challenges faced, Maharaja’s compassionate demeanor and genuine concern for the well-being of devotees were palpable. His loving inquiries and reassuring presence had a calming effect, offering solace and guidance to troubled hearts.
Reflecting on Maharaja’s strong-willed faith in Lord Krishna and his determined commitment to the teachings of acarya’s and Srila Prabhupada, it becomes evident that his life is a proof to the transformative power of devotion and service. Whether through the distribution of sacred texts or the construction of grand temples, Maharaja’s endeavors are characterized by meticulous attention to spiritual integrity and divine purpose.
Despite his global responsibilities, Maharaja’s essence remains deeply connected to his devotees. However, in recent times, the demands of his duties had made it increasingly challenging for devotees to have frequent personal interactions with him. Nevertheless, Maharaja’s dedication to serving the global community of devotees continued unabated.
As we bow in reverence at the lotus feet of param-pujya Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja, we are reminded of the transformative power of devotion and the limitless grace of Krishna. His life serves as an inspiring example of humility, dedication, and unconditional love, guiding countless souls on their spiritual journey with reverence and grace.

In the realm of spiritual leadership, few possess the rare combination of personal integrity and clear vision. His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja stands out as an exemplary figure within the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Maharaja’s unwavering dedication to his personal practices and his steadfast adherence to the teachings of Srila Prabhupada make him a beacon of inspiration for devotees worldwide.
Maharaja’s deep commitment to the principles of Krishna consciousness is evident in every aspect of his life. Whether it is his devotion to chanting the holy names, his iron-willed faith in Srila Prabhupada’s words, or his consistent adherence to the bhakti process outlined by Srila Rupa Goswami, Maharaja exemplified what it means to live a life dedicated to spiritual practice. His integrity is not just a personal trait but a guiding light for others, demonstrating the transformative power of faith and dedication.
Being so close to Vrindavan, Delhi has often seen devotees attracted to various philosophies. However, Maharaja has always remained firmly rooted in the teachings of Srila Prabhupada, providing a clear and uncompromising path for others to follow. His role in establishing the Krishna-Balarama temple and his involvement in various holy projects reflect his deep connection to the sacred dhama and his commitment to the worship of the deities. Every morning, Maharaja performs mangala-arati and deity worship with a consistency that is both stunning and inspiring. This level of dedication is confirmation to his significant faith in the process of Krishna consciousness.
An anecdote from 2003 during the 25th-anniversary festival in Juhu highlights Maharaja’s humility and clarity. Despite being a host, Maharaja politely declined an invitation to honor prasadam at Govinda’s restaurant, stating that he had opened many such restaurants since 1971 but had never partaken of prasadam there. His focus was always on meeting his godbrothers and serving the mission of Srila Prabhupada.
Maharaja’s clarity of vision extends to his leadership within ISKCON. He has always emphasized the importance of distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books, understanding the immense effort and energy Srila Prabhupada invested in them. Maharaja is a personification of the book distribution mission. During a committee meeting in South India, he highlighted his stanch commitment to the December book marathon, leading devotees in this crucial endeavor every year. His dedication is such that the meeting dates were rescheduled to accommodate his steadfast commitment to book distribution.
In recent years, Maharaja has also played a pivotal role in leadership development within ISKCON. As a trustee of the GBC College for Leadership Development, established in 2015, Maharaja has been instrumental in training future leaders. His belief in the importance of leadership training has led to the maximum number of candidates being enrolled from his region, showing his dedication to ensuring that ISKCON is equipped with capable and well-trained leaders for the future.
My personal experiences with Maharaja have always been filled with affection and inspiration. Though I haven’t worked directly with him often, his love and blessings have touched my life deeply. When my mother received his blessings, she was profoundly moved, and to this day, she cherishes that interaction. She often asks when we will visit the temples Maharaja has established in Delhi, reflecting the deep impact he has on those he meets.
His Holiness Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja’s life and work are a testament to what can be achieved with deep faith, solid dedication, and a clear vision. His impact on ISKCON and its followers is immense and enduring. On this occasion, we offer our heartfelt respects and gratitude to Maharaja for his inspirational leadership and steadfast commitment to the path of Krishna consciousness.
Amogha Lila Dasa

Maharaja undoubtedly possessed an extraordinary personality, attracting countless devotees who gathered for his darsana at ISKCON East of Kailash. They stood in line throughout the night until 5:30 AM the following morning. Similarly, in Vrindavan, where I have never witnessed such a massive influx of devotees in the past 24-25 years, it was evident how deeply Maharaja touched the hearts of countless individuals. Being able to call such a great personality our Gurudeva and partaking in his divine pastimes in this world is truly our fortune.
Maharaja’s divine appearance took place in Delhi, a place known as Indraprastha, making it a sacred dhama. He was born on August 14, 1944, an auspicious Ekadasi day. Maharaja had two sisters, who shared a deep bond with him. Despite his family not being highly spiritual, Maharaja regularly visited temples and gurudvaras from a young age. His education was partially completed in Delhi and partially in Mumbai. Even at school, the prayer, “My Lord, I love you above everything in this world from all my heart and all my soul,” perfectly encapsulated Maharaja’s future life of devotion.
His father, who was in the navy, started an import-export business after experiencing a heart attack. Maharaja planned to join this business after completing his education in economics at Delhi University. Following his graduation and post-graduation, Maharaja joined the family business but was awarded a scholarship for further studies in France. This scholarship was given to only ten individuals across India, and Maharaja was one of them.
He studied French at two universities, becoming proficient in the language, and later pursued business management. His journey then took him to Montreal, where his knowledge of French proved beneficial. Despite financial constraints, Maharaja’s impressive credentials secured him a loan to continue his studies in Montreal. During his time there, he conducted market research, gaining valuable insights into management and the global economy.
While in Montreal, Maharaja learned that Srila Prabhupada was arriving and sought to serve him. He was given the task of cleaning the quarters where Srila Prabhupada would stay. Maharaja dedicated himself to this task, ensuring every corner was meticulously cleaned. Upon meeting Srila Prabhupada, their conversation immediately focused on the importance of preaching and the need for intellectuals to advance the mission. Maharaja’s commitment to spiritual practices and responsibilities impressed Srila Prabhupada.
Maharaja balanced his job and spiritual duties, attending morning programs and engaging in book distribution. His dedication led Srila Prabhupada to consider him highly responsible, an asset to the mission despite his professional obligations. Maharaja’s consistent presence and support in the morning programs became a cornerstone of his spiritual success.
Eventually, Srila Prabhupada assigned Maharaja the critical role of overseeing ISKCON’s activities in India, recognizing his managerial skills and deep devotion. Maharaja accepted this challenging responsibility, leaving behind a promising career in the material world. His work included preaching in difficult regions like Pakistan, demonstrating his fearless dedication to spreading Krishna consciousness.
Maharaja’s significant impact was evident in his interactions with devotees. His kindness and humility inspired many. Despite his rigorous schedule, he never compromised on his spiritual practices, such as reciting the Nrsimha-kavaca stotra for the protection of ISKCON and its devotees.
One of the most cherished aspects of my relationship with Sri Gurudeva is his unfathomable devotion to serving devotees. Our Guru Maharaja’s greatness lies not in grand oratory skills or mesmerizing kirtans but in his unparalleled dedication to Vaishnava-seva. Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura once remarked that the true dharma of Kali-yuga is Vaishnava-seva, and among the foremost exemplars of this sacred duty is Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja.
On one occasion, while traveling with some devotees who were hungry, Maharaja stopped the car and approached a roadside vendor. With his humble sannyasi bag in hand, he asked the vendor for some gajak and revdi for his disciples. The vendor, moved by Maharaja’s humility, offered everything he had.
His empathy extends to all beings. During a morning walk, Maharaja saw a beggar and instructed a devotee to fetch a jacket from their supplies for the beggar. Maharaja personally dressed the beggar, his eyes filled with tears. Maharaja’s heart overflows with pure, unadulterated compassion.
In matters of spiritual guidance, Maharaja is equally meticulous. Maharaja’s approach to spiritual guidance is marked by his leniency and understanding. He ensures that all aspirants, regardless of their initial shortcomings, receive the support they need to become sincere disciples. He is known for turning potential negative outcomes into positive lessons, always guiding with a tender hand.
A personal anecdote from my life illustrates this perfectly. I desired a spiritual name with “Lila” in it during my initiation. Maharaja, seemingly reading my heart, named me Amogha Lila Dasa. This connection, this divine intuition, is a witness to Maharaja’s deep spiritual insight.
Even in moments of my own controversies and struggles, Maharaja’s support has been rock-solid. Whether dealing with administrative challenges or personal missteps, Maharaja’s guidance has always brought me back to the path of devotion.
I will conclude with these lines that the divine qualities of Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja—his unyielding service to Vaishnavas, his limitless compassion, and his reflective spiritual insight—make him a true beacon of light in this world. At his lotus feet, I offer my deepest respects and pray for the strength to walk the path he has illuminated with such grace and humility.
Caitanya Carana Dasa
I had three major interactions with Gopala Krishna Goswami Maharaja, which I will share here.

I was introduced to him in Pune when he was the GBC there. He would visit us twice or thrice a year. I had published some articles in The Times of India when I had written a book. I would give it to him and he would appreciate it. In 2006, when the recession came up, Maharaja had come to Pune and told me that I want talk to you. I said, “Certainly Maharaja.” I went to his room and he said, “You are a writer. You should write a book on how this global economic meltdown has been caused by greed and then connect it with the Bhagavad-gita 16.21 and offer a solution based on spirituality.”
I myself had been thinking about commenting on such issues as I used to comment on contemporary affairs. I was very touched, inspired, felt encouraged and empowered that Maharaja remembered what I was doing and Maharaja asked me to comment on it.
Maharaja would normally speak in Hindi, his classes were very sweet, heart touching and simple. But when I started talking with him about the specifics of the book, I was amazed, even awed, to see the level of his contemporary awareness and insights into the causes of the events that led to the meltdown and how he was able to expertly connect the deeper causes from the economic perspective with the spiritual principles given in the Bhagavad-gita. After completing that book when I asked Maharaja to write a Foreword, he immediately complied and said, “Send me some copies.” Later I was told by his assistant that he gave some of the copies of that book, Recession – Adversity or Opportunity, to several leaders and dignitaries in Delhi.
While the interaction in itself was very small but what struck me is that Maharaja is so aware of both the need and the opportunity for service and the people who can do that service. This is the true quality of a leader that he is having a vision to see what needs to be done.
Maharaja had a very clear vision of the temples that he wanted to build. Building temples and distributing books has been his primary service and offering to Srila Prabhupada. What he has done in Delhi is extraordinary. The kind of devotional infrastructure that Maharaja has built and inspired to be built in Delhi and North India, I think has practically no parallels in the history of our movement. While that has been his main service, that is glorious, but along with that Maharaja is so aware and alert to opportunities for other forms of outreach. This is what I see to be a very striking quality of a leader. I am so grateful for being a small part to become an instrument in his vision.
Now the second incident. A few years later I moved from Pune to Mumbai for my various services and my interactions with him became much lesser. Whenever I would go to Juhu, if he happened to be there, I would meet him briefly. One time an unknown number called me, and it was from Maharaja’s servant. He said, “Maharaja wants to talk with you.” I was amazed as I was just an unknown brahmachari and had not yet started any kind of international outreach. When I had a conversation with Maharaja, he told me that he is going to China to speak there on leadership. He went through my book named Ten Leadership Sutras Based on the Bhagavad-gita. He liked my book but he wanted me to be clearer in terms of points of action and implementation. He said, “You have given the principles, explained them well but also mention how those principles should get translate into practice.”
When I started writing my Gita Daily articles, that suggestion worked eventually and I started the “Think It Over Questions” section so that people can reflect and apply what they are reading. Again, it was a brief interaction, but I realized how again Maharaja, himself an international speaker with vast leadership experience across the world, first in the corporate and then in the ISKCON world, but still when he wants to make a presentation, he would collect the material, go through it thoroughly, review it very well. That was a great solace and encouragement for me. We shouldn’t think that we are so senior and we don’t need to prepare for our classes. Every speaking opportunity is a precious gift we have. We should use and cherish it.
My third interaction was when I had been visiting Delhi for some college programs and a few congregation programs. Fortunately, Maharaja happened to be there in the Radha-Parthasarathi temple and I requested whether I could meet Maharaja. To my great surprise and gratitude, he immediately agreed. He was supposed to meet for 15-20 minutes but spent almost one-and-a-half hours and we discussed various things.
Maharaja was so kind asking me about what I was doing. He said, “I have not seen you for many years. Where have you been?” One thing that struck me was that whenever he would see me, he would remember all our previous interactions just on the spur of the moment. Even when Maharaja would be going on a japa-walk, when he would see me, he would smile at me, call me by my name, ask how I am doing. It was really amazing that how people conscious Maharaja was within his Krishna consciousness.
I profusely appreciate and glorify Maharaja for the way the outreach is happening in Delhi. How he has empowered so many young people to take up such huge responsibilities! Young devotees are going out and opening temples. This has opened a new chapter in the history of our movement. Maharaja was so humble and kind. He would say, “We have learned it from Pune.” Maharaja, whatever little things you may have learned from Pune, it’s your vision, inspiration and your empowerment that is enabling devotees to do this!
I will also talk about how he addressed the challenges of criticism, especially criticism on social media, on the internet. That is the time when I was going through a difficult phase. This was 2016-2017. I had started doing international outreach. I had started coming a little bit into the limelight and naturally there was some criticism. What Maharaja replied stunned me.
It was an expression of his nonchalant confidence. He said, “I don’t bother what people talk about me on the internet. If they want internet to be their guru, why do they need me? There are enough people who are coming to me directly and I have enough to do in my service to Sirla Prabhupada and Krishna.” So that’s a message I have contemplated on many times — how can one be committed to the service and at the same time detached from criticism.
I remembered the verse 12.15 in the Bhagavad-gita where Krishna says, yasman nodvijate loko lokan nodvijate ca yah: “One who is not agitated by others and one who does not agitate others.” This is what exemplified Maharaja. He did extraordinary services, but he was always so soft-spoken and kind-hearted yet firm and determined in getting things done.
I have seen how he cared for devotees. If some devotee was being criticized, no matter how his health was, how busy he was, he would personally intervene to defend and protect the devotees from becoming so discouraged by criticism that they would go away. He didn’t really bother about criticism of himself but if those who he cared for were criticized he protected them. He had developed a thick skin and at the same time also had a soft tender heart within it. That is an extraordinary combination to have.
It is a day of great sorrow for me. On two or three occasions I happened to be in the same city and I wanted to meet Maharaja but somehow logistics didn’t work out. I am regretting now that I should at least have gone and had his darshan. My only solace is that I have his presence with me through his words and his memories. Many more memories will emerge with time as devotees will share their hearts. Also, his legacy in the form of beautiful temples he has inspired will also be with us.
I pray to Maharaja that the example he has demonstrated, not just of dedication in terms of doing big projects but also concern and attention to details, always lives within my heart. And by his inspiration, I will also serve Srila Prabhupada in my own small way and serve the mission that Maharaja led and gave his life to.
