Kalki 2898 AD Or Kalki 424000 AD
A new Bollywood presentation called Kalki 2898 has hit the theatres and has proved to be very popular. One thing is for certain, at least in India, that anything taken from its epics immediately strikes a sympathetic nerve with Indians. It is also true to some extent in other cultures of the world.
However, there is one major difference. For example, the Greeks have their Odyssey and Iliad. These were written by the poet Homer. Neither Homer nor his readers were under the impression that these need to be taken as real histories or whether they serve anything more than the entertainment appetite of the masses. On the contrary, Vyasa Muni and Valmiki Muni have always insisted that their compilations, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana are not mere fanciful imaginations of gifted poets, but a whole planned program of uplifting ignorant masses to the highest levels of spiritual progress.
This latest Bollywood creation has Asvatthama, Krishna, Karna and other famous characters of the Mahabharata but fails miserably when it comes to the part of spiritual upliftment. It’s neither intended nor does it succeed.
So, a layman may ask, who is this person called Kalki?
And the answer is that he is not an ordinary mortal being but very much the Supreme Lord Krishna himself. There are two major predictions about Sri Kalki Deva, and now we shall see them in detail.
The first prediction is in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (12.2.18) compiled five thousand years ago, where it is stated that:
“Lord Kalki will appear in the home of the most eminent brahmana of Sambhala village, the great soul Vishnuyasa. He will mount his horse Devadatta and, taking his sword in hand, will roam about the earth killing millions of bandits in the guise of kings.”
And the second prediction is found in the famous Dasavatara-stotra (10) of Sri Srila Jayadeva Gosvami. There he writes:
mleccha-nivaha-nidhane kalayasi karavalam
dhumaketum iva kim api karalam
kesava dhrita-kalki-sarira jaya jagadisa hare
“[O Kesava! O Lord of the universe! O Lord Hari who have assumed the form of Kalki! All glories to You! Like a comet bearing an indescribably terrifying sword, You annihilate the wicked barbarian kings at the end of Kali-yuga.]”
The real Kalki Deva is a fierce person who vanquishes the class of atheists born in the age of Kali. Anyone can see that currently many pseudo-religious principles are introduced in the name of religiosity and people in general are confused. Lord Krishna had spoken in the Bhagavad-gita about surrendering to his lotus feet as the safest route towards complete spiritual perfection, but modern-day so-called gurus oppose this idea. Even most people who claim to belong to the Vedic system of religion are actually opposed to the Vedic principles. Every day they manufacture a new type of dharma on the plea that whatever one manufactures is also a path of liberation.
Atheistic men generally say, yato mat tato path: (whatever path you may concoct is the real path for you). According to this view, there are hundreds and thousands of different opinions in human society, and each opinion is a valid religious principle. This philosophy of rascals has killed the religious principles mentioned in the Vedas, and such philosophies will become increasingly influential as Kali-yuga progresses. In the last stage of Kali-yuga, Kalkideva, the fierce incarnation of Keshava, will descend to kill all the atheists and will save only the devotees of the Lord.
Kali-yuga is what we have now been experiencing over the past 5,000 years. And there is an abundance of strife, ignorance, irreligion and vice, true virtue being practically nonexistent, and this yuga lasts 432,000 years. In Kali-yuga vice increases to such a point that at the termination of the yuga the Supreme Lord himself appears as the Kalki avatara, vanquishes the demons, saves His devotees, and commences another Satya-yuga.
Thus, devotees pray to Lord Kalki as follows:
“May Kalkideva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who appeared as an incarnation to protect religious principles, protect me from the dirt of the age of Kali.”
